Recently, the Supreme Court endorsed a decision issued by the Advisory Board of Judicial Conduct (Board), disciplining a former municipal court judge in Bergen County. The Board determined that the judge abused her power to influence a private issue. She was also found to have offended the integrity of the judicial system by acting improperly in front of local police officers.
The event subject of the ethical complaint related to a visit made by a law enforcement agent from the Attorney General Office for purposes of serving a grand jury subpoena on the judge's husband. At that point, the judge who was upstairs in her home called the local police office and requested some help. When the police arrived, the judge wanted the local police officers to arrest the Attorney General’s agent. When the local police explained the reason for the investigator’s presence, the judge became enraged and castigated the local police. It was this conduct that precipitated the ethics investigation.
