Today, there are two popular so-called synthetic marijuana/pot products called K2 and Spice that can be found in many convenience stores and head shops. These substances are sold as incense.
The synthetic component of these products produce a marijuana-like-high when smoked. The product has been subject of recent scrutiny to the extent that at least four states have banded its use (i.e. Arkansas, Kansas, Kentucky, and Alabama). Indeed, last week Alabama’s and Arkansas’s governor signed an emergency order prohibiting the use of the substance.
Last week the DEA elected to use its “Emergency Scheduling Authority” to control the dissemination of the chemicals used to make the “fake pot” products. It is expected that the synthetic cannabinoids used to make K2 and Spice will be soon placed on Schedule I which is the most restricted category of drugs.
